Painting with a Twist recap

outside painting with a twist

Thank you Painting with a Twist in Live Oak for hosting our fundraiser. Because of their generosity, Overcomers raised $1,252 to help support our new program launching in May. This program will be our Thrive to a Beautiful You Workshop.

This will be a hands on workshop to anyone affected by breast cancer. In this workshop, participants will learn about skincare and makeup application to help restore a sense of confidence and educate them on making positive safe choices to live a healthier and less harmful life. Above all, this workshop will be more than just makeup. This workshop will empower women to embrace their inner strengths and imperfections. While aligning their inner and outer beauty to become confident in their own skin. The Thrive to Beautiful You Workshop is going to create a movement towards a mindful, healthier way of living as survivors. Overcomers hopes to do more Painting with a Twist fundraisers in the future.

10 Breast Cancer Facts You Need To Know in 2019

Do you know what breast cancer is? Have you heard of it but don’t fully understand the disease? Is someone in your family, or one of your friends diagnosed with it? This blog post will cover the immediate facts of breast cancer symptoms in 2018, as well as an overview of the disease and what are the risk factors for breast cancer.

So let’s get to it…

what is breast cancer wording

What is Breast Cancer?

According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) :

“Breast cancer is a disease in which cells in the breast grow out of control. There are different kinds of breast cancer. The kind of breast cancer depends on which cells in the breast turn into cancer.

Breast cancer can begin in different parts of the breast. A breast is made up of three main parts: lobules, ducts, and connective tissue. The lobules are the glands that produce milk. The ducts are tubes that carry milk to the nipple. The connective tissue (which consists of fibrous and fatty tissue) surrounds and holds everything together. Most breast cancers begin in the ducts or lobules.

Breast cancer can spread outside the breast through blood vessels and lymph vessels. When breast cancer spreads to other parts of the body, it is said to have metastasized.

The most common kinds of breast cancer are—

  • Invasive ductal carcinoma. The cancer cells grow outside the ducts into other parts of the breast tissue. Invasive cancer cells can also spread, or metastasize, to other parts of the body.
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma. Cancer cells spread from the lobules to the breast tissues that are close by. These invasive cancer cells can also spread to other parts of the body.”

Overcomers October Fundraising Recap 2018

Our October fundraising was a huge success!

Introduction

Overcomers is very grateful to all of our donors for our 2018 October Fundraising season! We were able to raise $1373 to aid in our Pink under the Tree program. Below we will share a recap of all of the events in October that helped us reach this donation amount.

Brighton Power of Pink Fundraiser

Overcomers had the amazing opportunity to partner with Brighton La Cantera to help us raise $335  to add to our total. Throughout October, Overcomers volunteers manned a table at the Brighton La Cantera location, sharing with shoppers how Overcomers provides support for breast cancer survivors for the community of San Antonio and surrounding areas. Special thanks to PRMA, The Pink Boutique, and the Methodist Hospital nurse navigators.

Through generous donations from our friends on Facebook, we were able to raise over $300! Thank you to all of you who donated and helped make all of our facebook fundraisers a success! We were amazed by the support of all the people on social media.

What’s Next?

Overcomers will be delivering Christmas presents to families affected by breast cancer who otherwise would not be able to afford presents, which we are calling, Pink Under the Tree. (Note: Overcomers is not taking applications, but is partnering with local nurse navigators to select families who most need these presents.) We thank all of our donors who make this possible. I urge you to like and follow our Facebook Page, as I know we will be posting more information about this program in the future.

Did you attend one of these events or have any feedback on a fundraiser we should do in the future? Let us know in the comments!

Overcomers Retreat 2018- Recap

From September 14-16, I was in Port Aransas with 23 other breast cancer survivors, fellowshipping and enjoying a getaway.  We witnessed so many personal touches from God.   The storm was around us but God was there to show us “He remains in control!”  Our goal for this retreat was to provide tools and applications for the ladies to revive, refresh and renew.   Thank you for your prayers and your generous donations that made this retreat possible.

I wanted to start by thanking the retreat leaders, our board and our leadership team for supporting us this weekend.  Thank you to Norma for driving the other van with me to get our ladies to and from the locations safely. Genny and Norma- Retreat Drivers

Thank you to Aimee for bringing us a great word and helping us stretch and gain strength in her Pilates session.  Thank you to Dez for that beautiful art session on her drawing that she received inspiration from during her tough season and sharing her testimony about the importance of following God. He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Thank you to Diane for sharing her heart with the names of God and being bold in our faith and remembering to love Gods people even the tough ones. Thank you to Minerva for sharing her testimony and the examples of the battles in the Bible and where we saw victory with obedience.  Thank you to our Co-Founder and Chef Jessica for sharing her exceptional cooking skills with us and for bringing us the message in the bottle and the Footprints in the sand. Thank you to Aimee, Dez & Jess for going ahead of us to unload all the food and bags to prepare for our arrival.  Thank you to Sheri and Dianna and Sheri’s parents for hauling all that bottled water down for us to use.  I’m thankful for the opportunity to teach my sessions as I shared the word of God with the ladies,  the vision I received from Him to organize this retreat and prepare the booklets and the admin details behind the scenes with my sweet son and marketing director, Alexander. (You can read his testimony here) We were blessed by great teachings from our leaders, amazing food, fellowship and love for one another.   We saw breakthroughs, salvation and releasing our control over to God. We also want to thank Harrison’s Landing for providing us a healthy menu choice for our retreat and a space to eat.

Welcome to our New Breast Cancer Blog

An introduction to the Overcomers Blog

Welcome to Overcomers blog!

We realize that there are so many of you out there that need encouragement and support, the kind of support we wish we had when we were starting our breast cancer treatments.  Our mission is to continue to encourage, equip and empower women and their families.  By writing this blog, we hope to connect with more of you and be another resource that you will think of when it comes to breast cancer and all that it entails.  We will focus on the mind, the body, the spirit and will continue to be a voice for as long as God allows.   Above all else, remember breast cancer is not your fault.  Your life is priceless and when you face your darkest hour, remember that hope is what we hold onto.  Hope Thou in God.  We are praying with and for you!
